Solar-powered trash compactors to play a role in greening Port Jeff

Port Jefferson, NY - Walking around Port Jefferson this week residents and visitors have noticed something new: mini solar-powered trash compactors and recycling bins. The combined units, green in color and in purpose, were purchased by the village with support from the Business Improvement District.

They are called BigBelly solar compactors by the manufacturer and 20 of them are being deployed in the lower and upper commercial districts, according to a village press release. The compactors hold five times as much trash as the old village garbage cans, which village officials expect will significantly reduce the labor and operating costs, including fuel for Highway Department vehicles, associated with emptying the cans. With those savings, it is reasoned, the BigBelly compactors will pay for themselves.

Karen Sullivan was examining one of the units yesterday morning along Main Street in lower Port Jefferson. “I think it’s a fabulous idea,” said Sullivan, who is involved with the implementation of recycling at the elementary school. Sullivan called it great the village is on the same page as the school district when it comes to the environment.

BigBelly Solar Power Comes to Port Jeff – Green & Clean Trash Is Here!

There are lots of new trash bins popping up all around Port Jefferson. The village is going green and the old green metal trash containers have been replaced by some high tech, solar powered models. These deluxe garbage cans are made by a company call BigBelly Solar, an innovator in waste control management. Our new trash cans contain a solar powered mini compactor and hold 5 times the amount of trash of the soon to be retired old metal cans. Besides holding more garbage, they send a text message to the bat cave when they are filled up. Now that’s a great garbage can! The new trash bins also have a recycle bin for plastic and bottles.
