Officials announced Thursday the city has received a $219,000 grant that will bring about money-saving alternative energy initiatives previously delayed for lack of funding.

The Energy Efficiency Conservation Block Grant from the Department of Energy will pay to install solar-powered parking meters and garbage cans, and help pay industry experts to write grants for future green tech projects, city officials said.

... federal funds will pay for solar-powered, self-compacting, lidded trash cans officials want up and running on the Boardwalk before next summer. Massachusetts-based BigBelly Solar manufactures the cans and already has sold them to other cities, including Chicago and Philadelphia. Because the compaction means the cans take longer to fill, they require about two-thirds less manpower for service.
