Parks and Beaches
High visitor volume during peak periods often causes waste levels to exceed bin capacity. In other settings and seasons, limited activity may necessitate trash collection trips when ultimately there is little trash to collect – without information, you don’t know. At both ends of the usage spectrum, process “waste” and unnecessary costs result – an expensive proposition and one that is difficult to manage.
Litter is unsightly and invites pest issues – both of which are unacceptable in park settings. Visitors to parks and beaches expect clean and beautiful settings, expectations that can drive high operating costs for those entrusted with assuring this scenic experience: over-provisioned trash bins, excessive vehicle trips and staffing, “bursty” and unpredictable activity that further complicates the right balance of service and cost. In busy park settings, these issues often lead to additional problems, including high pollution levels and congestion from trash vehicles.
What is to be done? The BigBelly Solar intelligent waste & recycling collection system is a compelling answer. BigBelly’s use of renewable power to displace the use of fossil fuels is inherently appealing to park and beach visitors. Fewer trash collection visits mean lower costs, less pollution and less congestion. Additionally, the enclosed nature of the BigBelly components keeps waste inside and out of the fields, woods and bodies of water. The enclosed design also deters animals and pests, which would otherwise gravitate toward open top waste receptacles in hopes of finding food, bringing with them unwelcome disease and territorial aggression.
Cost-related cutbacks that result in park closings or more limited park hours may be alleviated through a more efficient approach to cost management afforded by the BigBelly System. Health-related issues may also be a driver of periodic park & beach closings. To reduce the number of beach closings, the City of Chicago placed BigBelly solar compactors at beach locations to keep birds from feeding on the overflowing trash and generating high levels of E. Coli. Numerous other customers have relied on the enclosed design of BigBelly System waste & recycling components to keep wind blown trash out of rivers, lakes and ocean.
By holding 5x the waste of a conventional receptacle in an enclosed compacting component, providing convenient recycling solutions, and putting powerful information tools in the hands of park supervisors, the BigBelly Solar intelligent waste & recycling collection system keeps litter in, animals out, and visitors happy.
